Dear Subscriber First Name, Have you ever been in that moment, at the park, at a family dinner, at a playdate, where your child grabs a toy from another kid or says something rude to Grandma and you freeze a little, not quite sure what to do next? You want to address it, but you've also heard that making your child say "I'm sorry" is just performative and doesn't actually teach them anything. So you pull your child aside and talk to them about their behavior but the person on the other end of it is still just left hanging. Here is what I want you to know: the in-the-moment apology matters. And there is actually a two-step process for turning those uncomfortable moments into something that builds real accountability in your child over time. Step one happens right then and there, a verbal apology. And yes, even a reluctant one counts. Step two is where accountability comes in. It is the follow-up conversation that helps your child understand why it mattered, what the other person felt, and what they want to do differently next time.
One of my favorite tools for that second step is an apology letter. And here is the simple three-part structure I use: Say what you are sorry for (name it) "I am sorry for hitting you." "I am sorry for leaving you out of our game." Name the feeling you caused (empathy) "I hurt your feelings." "I made you feel sad." "I know that scared you." Say what you will do differently (accountability) "Next time I will use my words." "I want to be more respectful to you."
This even works for kids who cannot write yet. They dictate, you write, they sign their name or draw a picture at the bottom. The process is the point. This is just the beginning.
