Dear Subscriber First Name, One thing I’ve been noticing in my parenting classes lately is how often the topic of entitlement comes up. Parents are worried—and honestly, I get it. It’s a valid concern. None of us want to raise children who walk through the world believing it owes them something. As I’ve been reflecting on this, I keep coming back to something foundational in child development: kids need to feel needed. Why? Because feeling useful is deeply tied to survival—and even at a young age, children are wired to seek purpose and belonging. So how do we channel that in a healthy, grounded way?
By teaching both personal and family responsibility. It’s one of the most powerful tools we have to help kids feel confident, connected, and valued—without sliding into entitlement. Personal responsibility is about taking care of themselves and is additive - it builds over time. What starts as putting away their toys might later grow into doing their own laundry or making their own meals. Family responsibility, on the other hand, is about contributing to the group - it’s static, meaning the amount stays about the same over time. One or two consistent responsibilities that benefit everyone are enough throughout their childhood. The key difference? Personal responsibility is about me, and family responsibility is about us. When my boys were younger, one of their family responsibilities was to plan a family meal—they made a list of ingredients, considered everyone’s preferences, and helped shop and cook. We relied on them, and they knew it. That sense of contribution helped build not only their confidence but also their understanding of what it means to be part of a family team. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITYTaking care of ME — grows over time as children mature These are tasks that help children build independence and self-confidence. The list below is organized developmentally, starting with toddlers and progressing as kids grow. Age Range: 2 - 3 yrs Put toys away, throw trash in bin, help dress self (pull up pants, put on shoes), carry their own stuff
Age Range: 4 - 5 yrs Brush teeth (with supervision), clear own plate, refill water bottle, pick out clothes, help pack lunch/snack
Age Range: 6 - 7 yrs Make bed, start laundry with help, prepare simple breakfast, manage homework folder, pack for activities
FAMILY RESPONSIBILITYTaking care of US — remains steady and shared These tasks benefit the whole family and teach kids that everyone contributes to the well-being of the group. Limit to 1–2 regular tasks depending on age. Age Range: 2 - 3 yrs Help feed the pet (with supervision), carry in light groceries, put napkins or utensils on the table, sweep under table after mealtimes (or use hand held vacuum), refill toilet paper
Age Range: 4 - 5 yrs Match everyone’s socks, help water plants, wipe the table, put away dishes, refoled blankets in living room
Age Range: 6 - 7 yrs
When children feel like they contribute to the well-being of the family, they begin to understand that they are needed, not just loved. That sense of contribution builds self-worth and reduces entitlement—because instead of believing things will always be done for them, they experience what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves.
