Dear Subscriber First Name, I want to share something personal with you today because it is one of the hardest parts of my own parenting journey, and I know I am not alone in it. My son has always been the tallest kid in his class. By 4th grade he was taller than his teacher. And naturally, everywhere we went, people would ask: does he play sports? So of course, I put him in all the sports. And you know what? He hated it. We tried again and again. Different sports, different seasons, different coaches. It just was not for him. And for a long time I wrestled with one of the most agonizing questions a parent can face: do I keep encouraging him to stick it out, give him the right motivation, the right push, or do I listen to him and let it go? Honestly? The decision was eventually made for me. He just flat out refused. And I had to let it go. Years later, he found his own thing. Weightlifting. And he loves it. He is 6'8" and he found something that is entirely, beautifully his. But when I look back on those years, I feel the weight of it. I kept pushing longer than I should have. And when I am honest with myself, I think I was more influenced by outside voices — coaches who were excited about his height, people who saw his potential in a sport — than by actually listening to my son. That experience is a big part of why I put together a framework to help parents navigate this exact question. Because it is one of the toughest calls we have to make, and most of us are making it without any real guidance. Knowing when to push and when to back off comes down to paying close attention to the signals your child is sending — not the ones we hope they are sending.
